Depression

Depression is like being at the beach

And you’re standing in front of the waves.

It will hit you repeatedly
and you can try to resist
but once the waves get too high
you’ll fall under the pressure.

Once that happens
you’re under.

Your eyes begin to burn
because they can’t stand
to look at what they don’t
want to see and even if you try,
everything is out of focus anyway.

People can try to help
but they don’t understand that
it’s not just problems with sight.
Their words can’t penetrate the water
that fills your ears.

This leaves you deaf to their cries
and the loneliness sinks in.

You believe there’s no hope
that there is nothing to live for
so what’s the point of having air
in your lungs?

It’s better just to invite the water
and let it pull you down further
by then it’s too late.
Hands try to reach you
but your too heavy to pull up.

The numb sensations start
and you move by involuntary reflex.
Your end comes and the wave
takes you out into the ocean.

People think it’s a sign of selfishness
and they don’t deserve the attention.

You are in the right state of mind.
so how can you possibly understand
what you may have never experienced.
In the mind of someone depressed
you are the selfish one.

You say you want them around
because seeing you makes them happy.
But their life is miserable
so to them you’re saying,
“You want them to stay alive
so they can remain miserable?”

It’s a powerful and destructive
Disease.
If you disagree with me then fine
but I speak from experience.

I’ve been depressed,
I’ve been angry at the world,
and I still fight with it
even to this day.

Yes, others have it worse.
Some people drink
while others smoke
and some do even worse.

Depression is a powerful wave
that has taken many lives.
To those still fighting,
you’re not alone.

The Man Who Waited

He doesn’t look for
the one who reminds him
of his mother.
His name isn’t Oedipus.

He doesn’t look for
the one who reminds him
of himself.
Why would he try?

He doesn’t look for
the wrong one just for
the sake of sex and company.
That’s like drinking salt water.

You call it being picky
but he refuses to settle for less.
We all only have one life
to get things right.

There shouldn’t be a need
for a reset.

Haiku

Ego isn’t sin.
Ambition isn’t madness.
Don't settle for less.

If you have time left,
then put the controllers down.
Life is the real game.

To say I love you
is so difficult today.
Our lips need to part.

The fire comes fast
With bad lustful intentions.
Watch your heart closely.

There is no future.
Only the present to live.
Stop being concerned.

For once, cut the bull.
All I’ve ever been is true.
I’m nobody’s fool.

If you want a wife,
then stop going to that site.
Hookers can’t be brides.

What you want is cruel.
You want your world on my back.
You’ve stolen my life.

Honesty is dead.
Everyone rests in facades.
A country of fools.

Chairs are for sitting.
So why do I see your feet?
That explains the ants.

New Year's Toast

Happy new year to you all!
Here I stand with this glass so tall,
in front of all of you I would like to call,
so let your ears catch my words as they fall.

To new beginnings,
to new endings,
to new friends,
to new enemies,
to new lovers,
to new haters,
to new pleasures,
to new regrets,
to new problems,
to new lessons,
to new failures,
to new successes,
to new lives,
to new goodbyes,
and to one constant reminder.

Be happy to see the new
because that’s one thing others can’t do.
Be grateful for everything you go through
because that’s what will make you.
Never fail to be kind and true
because love is found on days so few.

Now this may be called cliché,
but just remember one year I will lay
and never rise again to say
I love you as we embrace at the bay.
I accept that there will be that day,
so when my time comes, and I go away
remember these words and don’t betray.

It’s okay to regret,
It’s okay to hate,
It’s okay to fail,
It’s okay to make a mistake,
but don’t be constant.

We are all flawed,
no exceptions.
As long as you have time,
then you have a chance.

Have moments, not memories.
Take chances, not security.
Remember briefly, forget often.
Love your haters, the way they love you.
Live for me, the way I die for you.

Happy new year everyone.

For the Soul

For the love of the game.
For the feel of dirt in your hands.
For the touch of the skin.
For the smell of a scent.
For the sound of laughter
For the taste of sweets.
For the satisfaction of success.
For the desire of your heart.

What’s the point of a soul
if you won’t fill it?

Spider-Man: Welcome Miles Morales

Spider-man, arguably one the most popular comic book character ever created, and fans were excited to finally see him on the big screen. When Sony acquired the rights to bring the web-head to theaters almost 17 years ago, they immediately jumped in with Sam Raimi’s version with Tobey Maguire starring. The film would lead to a trilogy that started out as a smash, then bombed critically with the third and final film. Things wouldn’t get any better with Andrew Garfield putting on the mask as the planned trilogy didn’t even get passed the second film. It was only until Sony allowed Disney/Marvel to use the character for three of their M.C.U. films did interests still show for the superhero.

Sony went ahead and decided to do a less costly version by doing a cartoon version and introducing a new spider-man. Miles Morales, a character that’s been introduced to fans via comics, cartoons and the recent Spider-Man game for PS4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse seeks to solidify Morales as a new fan favorite with fans with a film primarily focused on him. Miles Morales, much like Peter in the beginning, is a teenager growing up in Brooklyn with issues that most teenagers in today’s society face until history repeats itself. The only difference is a different tragedy strikes Miles that inspires him to dawn the mask, but not without difficulty.

It turns out that Kingpin, a villain mostly related with Daredevil, has a plan to open a door to other realities for a specific purpose. While Miles tries to come up with a plan in order to stop him, he’s aided by Spider-men from other realities. Some of them are fan favorites, others are well known, and one is mostly for comic relief.  It’s a fun rollercoaster ride that has plenty of action and comedy that you would expect to see from the famous webslinger. The film also does a good job at paying homage to films that came before it and has a touching moment with creator, Stan Lee, who passed away just a short time ago.

The film has great voice acting by some big-name celebrities such as Chris Pine, Nicholas Cage, Zoe Kravitz and Mahershala Ali. It’s got some dark tones but is overall a great family friendly film with a great soundtrack that gets the people going. The only problem I can say about the film is that it’s a little rough on the eyes with its use of animation. Some of the transitions are too fast to catch and the main boss fight is hard to follow because of the setting. Overall, it’s a risk that Sony took and I’m hoping that it’s going to pay off, so I give this film a nine out of ten.

As good as this film is, it’s got the unfortunate task of going up against upcoming blockbusters like Bumblebee and Aquaman in the following week. This film cost 90 million to make, so it shouldn’t be hard to make a profit from the film, but it needs to have a big opening week. I hope it succeeds because this was the fresh start that Sony needed for Spider-Man and Sony has been hot after the financial success of Venom. It would be great to see how Miles’s story plays out if it succeeds at the box office and there’s a touching tribute to Stan Lee mid-credits and a hilarious post credit scene. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a great way to kick off the holiday season with your family, so go see it and enjoy.

Keep Breathing

Feet planted firm.
Nails razor sharp.
Wounds healed
and skin hardened.

After months of
an onslaught of acid tears
and unforgiving winds.
She survived the storm.

Now pain is just a word.
The tears have run their course.
Her head is up
and vision looking forward.

The path was torture,
the heartache was an anchor,
but the chain is broken.
The weight of another is cut loose.

All it took was one breath
to get started.
She kept breathing,
now she has no shadow.

A broken heart
solidified in fire.
A damaged soul
refueled in faith.

To all that need to breathe
just look at her and see.
There’s always light to reach.
You just have to keep breathing.
