A Fallen Angel

A Fallen Angel
An angel is falling from the sky.
She is in a vortex, helplessly
going down a downward spiral,
screaming for help in mid air.

She looks so pure and innocent.
She is an angel, but she can’t fly.
And, as I look with a hawk’s eye, I see
her wings are broken.

I wonder why she has been sent to this realm,
a realm of my vision,
an endless forest were disruption meets oblivion
and lost souls meet renaissance.
She lands in the lake of my forest.

She is 5 foot 2 and about 130 pounds,
But, like a small stone, makes no splash,
just ripples in the water.
Yet, the impact sounds like that of an atom bomb.

I get on my stallion, the eternal mustang,
and ride to the lake where I see her
floating on her back like a flower.
I pull her out and go back to my cabin in the forest.

I put her in my bedroom
because there is no other.
I sleep in front of the fireplace
and wonder where to start.

The next day, she wakes up,
and I come in with breakfast.
She is startled, but I calm her down.
I tell her that I am a friend.

“I am one who cares for all.
I give comfort and shelter to those in need.
You may simple call me friend
because that’s all I’ll ever be.”
She eats the eggs I’ve made for her and
drinks the water that I’ve purified.

After a while, I finally ask her,
“Angel, why did you fall from the sky?”

She says, “I lost my way.
I just got bored with eternity,
so I wanted to leave.
I got my wish, and now I have nothing.
That’s why I guess I’m here,
to be forgotten.”

I say to her, “He doesn’t forget, and he does forgive.
Somebody so beautiful should express happiness, not fear.
In time, you will learn to smile again
and never again feel sorrow.”

With her wings wrapped and her body healed,
she begins to live with me here in the forest.
We take walks in the morning to see the sunrise and
have dinners in the front window of the cabin to see the sunset.

I cook her all my favorite recipes
from lasagna to baked ziti.
But when we get to the desert --
freshly made cherry pie -- her favorite.

Weeks after her arrival, she asks me,
“Why are you here?”

I tell her the truth.
“I was once lost like you were.
I fell just as you did, but found my way.
But unlike me, you still have a choice.”

She asks, “What kind of choice?”
I say, “You’ll know it when you feel it.”
She gets confused, but, months later,
confusion turns into compassion.

Many times, she welcomed me to bed with her.
Every time I declined, not because of un-attraction.
It was just going to make it easier on me in the end
because I knew the day was approaching.

A year has passed. Her wings are healed.

She flaps them up and down
and gets herself off the floor.
I smile at her success, but she can see
my invisible frown.

The time has come, and I say, “Let’s go to the lake.”
But when we go, there is no lake,
just an open field with a ray of light in the middle.
She sees now the choice that must be made.

Leave or stay?

There is no turning back.
But, before she makes the choice,
she asks me with a heart-broken voice,
“Why did you stay?”

I say, “I wasn’t the first.
I knew I wasn’t going to be the last.
I made the choice to stay
and help other angels like you and I.”

She asks, “What if I stay with you?

Help other angels by your side?
I can’t image eternity alone.
I don’t want that to be your fate.”
I say, “That’s not your choice to make.

This realm is of my vision.
This is my eternity, and this is how I choose to spend it.
If you decide to stay, I will be the one that goes.
Either way, one of us is leaving, and it’s going to be you.”

She says, “How do you know?”

I say, “Because you’ve learned again what’s most important.
Eternity is what you make of it.

This is mine, and I do it with pride.
Now you can go and find something to take pride in.”
Angel says, “I will miss you.
You gave me back so much.”

I say, “You’re welcome.
That complement is why I do this.

Now, it’s time to fly.”
She hugs and kisses me goodbye
then slowly moving towards the light,
never taking her eyes off me.
With new wings, she heads back to paradise.

As she disappears into the light,
I say, “Lord,
your child has returned to you.
My love and wishes go with you angel.”

I turn back and head for my cabin.
My energy is now spent.
My body is weak.
My head is light as a feather.

I now go to bed and sleep
until the next is sent.

3 Years and Still Writing

This time 3 years ago, I self published my first book. Madness in a Recession a book of poetry about my life and the people I've met, some I've loved, others I hated but all were important to me. This was a vital step in my decision to resume writing because I was in a deep form of depression. I was and still up to my neck in debt, I didn't have the job that I wanted, I wasn't around the people I wanted to be around and my life was going nowhere. I had given up.

Then I met a friend, Ralph and we worked together for some time now. He saw one of my poems A Fallen Angel and asked me why haven't tried to find a publisher. I have A Writer's Reference and I had been mailing agents and publishers samples of my work. A few years after graduating college, I gave up especially when bills started piling up. Then I got a good job with a great company and then some weight was finally being lifted, I started having free time on my hands.

While at Barnes and Noble, I found a book on how to start self-publishing and get my work out there. I know it's barely no money but I wasn't making money off my work anyway so where's the loss? So I begin where I believe everyone should, writing a book about who they are and where they come from because I want people to know me, not just the stories I write. When I finally released Madness in a Recession, I've never felt so accomplished.

It was a hard and complicated process at first but once I published the book 3 years ago today, it's easy as pie now. Other books have followed such as a short story, a short horror story, a screenplay, a comedy stage play, and now I'm finishing my first trilogy. I've also done work as a narrative script writer for Humaya studios and working on my second book of poetry. All this in a span of 3 years and I have to confess, I feel as though I've been falling behind.

I should've been doing this earlier but someone down the road after college, I just lost sight of everything. I was just following a daily routine of wake up, shower, got to work, come home and go back to bed. I wasn't happy, I didn't take any pride in myself, and I didn't care if I was still alive or not. Now that I'm self publishing, I can honestly say that I'm in a better place and I take pride in my work now. I know the life of a writer isn't easy but then again, I don't ask for an easy life. I just want a life that's worth living for.
Some people want to be admired through the end of time but I've learned going to college, that's not our decision to make. There's no point in trying so hard to be remembered because you don't get to decided what you're remembered for. Some people are happy with being forgotten and that's fine too. There are countless lives that were important at some point in time and we don't know about them and we never will.

Whichever side of the coin you're on, we all share one common right.
We all have the right to leave something behind that will benefit humanity and help it progress. When I die I want to say that my work will influence someone just as much as Edgar Allen Poe, Tom Clancy, Stephen King and William Wordsworth have influenced me. This is my motivation to resume writing and keep getting my work out there for everyone to read. I've made my mistakes on the way but then again if you show me someone who hasn't made a mistake, I'll show you someone who has never tried.

Everyone has a right to contribute something to society and I hope one day that one of my works will be that contribution. It's been an uplifting 3 years and counting and I'm hoping for much more to be delivered. Thank you all for listening and Until the next is written.

Goodbye Robin Williams We Lost a Great Man Today

A Brilliant Robin
Ever since you and Mindy met,
I have never been able to keep my eyes off you.
When I saw you sail in with Olive
and flex your big forearms,
I knew you were a brilliant Robin.

I never needed toys
cause I watch you for amusement.
I never had to go fishing with grandpa
because I was watching a king on the screen.

The way you made us laugh with Comic Relief.
It was like watching poetry in motion,
like you were the leader of a dead society.
And you touched our hearts with more than comedy.

You’ve been everywhere from cold Moscow
to seeing a good morning in Vietnam.
Just to see you do what you can do
is a real awakening.

The way you can change colors
by turning into a big blue clown,
making dreams of a pauper come true
easier than saying Bibidy Bobidy Boo.

You’ve even changed sexes,
and proved that being an old lady
can be funny and lovable.
It’s almost like you have artificial intelligence.

Then, there is your voice
that hides so many others.
If I didn’t know any better Jack,
I’d say you were a machine covered in furry skin.

You can’t be real.
It’s like you popped out of Neverland
because you never get old in spirit.
There’s always a fresh joke for you to tell.

No birdcage can hold you.
I would have an easier time
trying to catch air with hands.
Your humor is what dreams can come.

You have done so much a man can do.
It’s almost like you have Insomnia
because you never seem to sleep.
You should be man of the year.

If there was a museum of you,
I’d wait all night there with happy feet.
I’d take a picture of you,
and rush it to one hour photo.

I hope somehow I get to meet you someday.
So, until then I will say thank you for everything.
You are a brilliant Robin, and, until there is another,
Good Hunting Mr. Williams.

The Devil

The Devil
By
Anthony Labson

Hiding behind angelic eyes
and using a serpent’s tongue.
He shows off his chiseled abs
hiding his stone cold heart.

Women fall on top of him
the minute he smiles at them.
They think they met the one
but soon find it’s the last.

Men admire him for his success
but that’s like admiring a king
after he committed genocide
and denied the culture a moment
in history.

Money is always in his pocket
but he always talks his way into
making you spend your own.
He always finds a way to leave
with something free.

Life is nothing but a game
and he believes he owns it.
Hopefully he’ll learn someday
that even players get played.

I highly doubt it.
When you’re the devil
you’re use to the fire
and cold is in your nature.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review

I’m going to save certain people a lot of time and just say that if you’re a purist and not a huge fan of Michael Bay, don’t bother watching this movie. So much has been changed because of this new generation of CGI and demand for fresh ideas, the origin tale has been completely altered. However, for people like me who will give anything a chance and keep an open mind, there’s hope for you. This movie does have something to offer for the ones like me who grew up with the famous heroes in a half shell. When this reboot was first announced, people were skeptical and the fact that it was produced by Michael Bay wasn’t giving purist fans confidence.
These are the same people that grew up watching Transformers and absolutely hated the movies with a passion. Personally I like most of them with the exception of the second one, Revenge of the Fallen. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is going to have the same problem because while Michael Bay didn’t direct, his touch of over the top action minus in depth storyline is visible throughout the whole movie. There’s not much character development and the acting is more or less novice at best by Will Arnett whom plays camera for Megan fox who plays the famous friend of the turtles, April O’Neal.
The only good acting I saw was through the side villain played by William Fichtner. He plays a wealthy business man Eric Sacks whom has dark intentions as he is later revealed to be working with the infamous Shredder, leader of the foot clan. While some things stay true to the original point of the foot soldiers, it’s disappointing that they seem to be more mercenaries than actual ninjas. Shredder’s true identity is kept in the dark, probably to save it for another movie. When he gets into his armor, it’s all shock and awe with a dazzling new look but once he shows off all his equipment, it quickly begins to go over the top.
The character traits of the turtles is accurate in all of them with Leonardo the leader, Raphael is the hot head, Donatello is the genius and Michelangelo is the fun loving kid of the group. I know everyone was thinking the turtles were too big from all the previews but once you see the origin story then it makes some sense but I do agree their look could’ve been toned down a bit. The fight chorography was excellent, especially when getting to see Splinter fight and he has good amount of fight time in the movie. I wasn’t that excited since I saw Yoda fight in Star Wars: Attack of The Clones.
The ending leaves plenty of room for a sequel and there is a special Easter egg for a possible villain in the sequel if there is one. I’m not sure this is going to be the great comeback that fans were hoping for. With all the fighting and explosions that go on, there is virtually no room for any kind of connection with the characters so people who never even heard of the turtles will get lost real quick. So much dialogue was rushed in certain scenes and without any explanation, the people that don’t know the turtles will be left wonder what the hell were they talking about? As far as the kids go, they’ll love it because it’s the turtles and they’ll love watching it and wanting to be a turtle.
I remember the Turtles back when I was little and I would wake up early every morning to catch their show back in the 80s. I’ve watched all of their movies and haven’t really had any complaints because I try to keep an open mind. This one was no exception but I have to admit I wanted to be nice but I can’t. I have to give this movie a 6 out of 10 because it will entertain the kids you bring to the theaters but some will disagree with this next generation of TMNT. This movie can only be described as a 90 minute roller coaster ride that gives tons of excitement but was over just as fast as it began.
Would I pay to see this movie again? No, I know it definitely wasn’t worth the 3D pricing but I have to realize this wasn’t made for me. It’s meant for this generation and I’m sure they will love this. It’s meant for the kids who know about this generation of the Ninja Turtles, not the Ninja Turtles I grew up with in the 80s with a wimpy shredder, mousers, Technodromes and a talking brain. There is no talking brain, no mousers, and definitely no wimpy shredder. This movie was not bad but it could’ve been so much better if they took more time to explain situations instead of leaving huge holes in the middle of the movie.
Megan Fox could’ve used more film time as April O’Neal so the audience could connect with her and Will Arnett’s character was so irrelevant I don’t recall hearing his name in the movie. It was a waste of his talent that could’ve been filled by someone else. I didn’t grow up with Transformers but I did with the turtles so now I understand what those purists went through when Transformers came out. However I didn’t shut this movie out and I wouldn’t suggest you do either because this is merely my opinion. Personally, I’m still a fan of Michelangelo and I still love wanting to be a turtle.

Faces of the Mass

Faces in the Mass
By
Anthony Labson

I am one out of countless others.
Some can be recognized faster
while others are easily ignored
but all are equally valued.

Spending my years among the mass
I’ve realized something about popularity.
Popularity doesn’t matter because in our end
we are all forgotten and time moves on.

It’s lonely at the top
and need to be around energy.
I need to be around life
and I need to be around the mass.

I need to be around the baby faces.
The ones who were born and
never really grew up,
staying forever cute.

I need to be around the beards.
The ones that say to hell
with standards and use it
as a form of expression and pride.

I need to be around the independent.
The ones who stand alone
and symbolize the strength of
individuality.

I need to be around the lovers.
The few that put others before themselves
that spread affection around like a wildfire.
We need more of them.

The ones who ignore the mass
only ensure oblivion.
I would rather be remembered by
the few that loved me instead of the millions
that never met me.
